A domain name is your custom place on the Internet. For example our domain name is bry.net. It lets everyone know a nice easy way of finding you in the many sites that are out there.
It is best to use an analogy that you may be more familiar with. An automobile. Each car has a unique Vehicle Identification Number, or VIN, you need that special number when registering your car. Just like a car's VIN number, each domain name on the Internet, corresponds to a unique Internet protocol address.
So a domain name is like your license plate, its what you tell everyone, and then they know which "car" is yours out of the billions available online.
What our goal then is to find the perfect vanity license plate for your business. A short domain name is good, but a domain name that contains keywords that reflect what your business is about is also a key component.
Then there is the debate on whether it should end in .com or .org, or any of the other 20 or so choices. Everyone is most familiar with .com, so finding a good one there is your best option. But think about it for a minute, they will either find your website through a search engine like Google, or else they are going to type it in from your business card or letterhead.
So with that in mind, they don't care what it ends in, just as long as it is easy to spell.
And don't forget that domain names are very low cost, there is no reason why you can't have a few of them, different spellings, or common misspellings, or other keywords, that all point to your one website.
If you have any other questions about what a domain name is, or would like to get started, just drop us a note!
